Additional information
Research area
Fabian Walter's research focuses on seismogenic processes near the Earth's surface, in particular within glaciers and ice sheets. Using seismic techniques, he investigates those parts of glacial bodies, which are difficult to access with conventional techniques. This has provided new insights into glacier sliding, the formation and calving of icebergs and the glacial plumbing system, which routes surface melt water through and under the glacier. Other scientific interests include monitoring of natural hazards research and induced seismicity.
Since 2015, Fabian Walter has been leading ETH's Glacier Seismology Group, which is hosted by ETH's Laboratory for Hydraulics, Hydrology and Glaciology (VAW) and the Swiss Seismological Service (SED).
News for 2018: The journal "Annals of Glaciology" will publish a special issue on cryoseismologycall_made.
