The Hydraulics division focuses its activities on fundamental research in fields related to hydraulic structures and river engineering. In the past decade, questions mainly concerning air-water two-phase flows, generation and propagation of impulse waves, jet and bridge scour and sediment erosion were studied. In addition to the hydraulic analysis of the investigated phenomena, detailed test series are conducted using hydraulic modeling. Based on a systematic variation of the relevant parameters influencing a phenomenon, the limitations of hydraulic experimentation in terms of scale effects are carefully considered. The research projects are typically conducted as doctoral theses and the results are published in international peer-reviewed journals. Furthermore, our division assures intense collaboration with international experts. Last but not least, teaching is a relevant assignment of our division, giving various courses and lectures at the D-BAUG of ETH Zurich, supervising Master theses and organizing laboratory courses for students.
