Applied Numerics

The Applied Numerics division deals with the development and application of numerical models in the fields of river and hydraulic engineering. The focus of our research and development activities is on improving and expanding the in-house software system called BASEMENT. This simulation software allows the modelling of flow and sediment transport in rivers. The predominant applications include hazard mapping, design of hydropower facilities and flood protection measures as well as bed load sediment budget studies.

Specific issues relating to the development of BASEMENT will be deepened in the context of PhD studies. Thus, a continuous development of the software is ensured.

In applied research, we use commercial CFD software, such as Flow-3D or ANSYS CFX, in addition to the in-house developments.

In teaching, the division participates with the course "Numerical Modeling in Hydraulic Engineering" and the supervision of Master theses in the field of numerical simulation.

The research projects of our division are usually embedded in greater projects. Details on the individual projects can be found at the following external websites:

Our research is being funded by the following institutions, whose sustained support is much appreciated.

For more information on the research and application of BASEMENT, please follow the project link in the navigation tree of the division.
