During long periods of heavy rainfall and flood events the Lake of Lucerne acts as a natural retention basin. The outflow regulating cross-section is situated in the river Reuss in the City of Lucerne and mainly consists of a historical Pin Weir. Unfortunately from a more technical point of view, the handling of the pins can by restricted and dangereous in case of high water levels in the river Reuss . Therefore an optimal flood proventing management might be impracticable.
VAW performed several hydraulic model investigations at different scales and helped as a consultant.
Main focus was on the problem of dredging the river bed and on the design of a new by-pass channel with a regulating sluice gate.
Between 1980 and 2002 VAW published several reports and expert opinions.
